Equity-Focused Professional Development for Investigation Committees

Co-designed and co-facilitated workshops that gave committee members practical tools to integrate equity and reduce bias in complex decision-making.

01

Challenge

Challenge

A professional college wanted to strengthen their committee members’ capacity to apply an equity lens to their processes. The challenge was to design a professional development program that would help participants understand how positionality and power dynamics  play a role in collective decision-making, and provide practical strategies and tools for applying an equity lens to their work.

02

Approach

Approach

Together with a colleague, I co-designed and co-facilitated workshops that provided collective learning opportunities for committee members. Key elements included:

  • Building a shared understanding of equity concepts, including lived experience, positionality, and intent vs. impact.

  • Introducing tangible strategies to integrate equity into committee processes, including reflection exercises, consensus-building techniques, and strategies for addressing problematic statements or approaches.

  • Engaging participants in hands-on exercises to practice applying concepts and skills in scenarios.

Outcome

Outcome

The project equipped committee members with both the knowledge and practical skills to embed equity into their work. Outcomes included:

  • Stronger alignment and shared understanding around equity concepts.

  • Enhanced ability to identify and address bias in decision-making.

  • Adoption of practical tools and approaches to ensure equitable processes.

My colleague and I were invited back the following year to continue the learning journey with committee members—building on the foundation we had created together. We have since been invited to work with staff in numerous departments within the organization.
