Embedding Equity in Academic Hiring

Directed a year-long pilot that embedded equity into academic hiring, producing a university-wide guide to strengthen inclusion and accountability in recruitment.

01

Challenge

Challenge

Hiring practices shape not just who joins an institution, but the culture and the future of the community. At the post-secondary level, there is growing recognition that academic hiring needed to be more equitable, consistent, and transparent. The challenge was to examine existing processes, identify barriers, and develop practical tools to embed an equity lens at every stage of recruitment and hiring.

02

Approach

Approach

I led a year-long pilot project within a university faculty to integrate equity into academic hiring practices. I partnered directly with hiring committees, participating in meetings in order to bring an EDI lens to the decision-making process. By using guided reflection questions, I was able to maintain a balance between offering insight and preserving the committee’s autonomy in final decisions. The project included:

  • Identifying systemic barriers and opportunities for improvement.

  • Testing new approaches in real time during committee meetings.

  • Collecting and analyzing feedback from participants throughout the pilot.

  • Developing recommendations grounded in both research and lived experience.

03

Outcome

Outcome

At the end of the pilot, I authored a comprehensive guide offering equity-focused recommendations for academic hiring. Since then, the guide:

  • Has been widely shared across the university.

  • Has informed strategic planning for future hiring practices.

  • Serves as a practical resource to help academic units strengthen equity, consistency, and accountability in their recruitment processes.
