Driving Systemic Change for Equity at a University Faculty

Secured $640K in funding to launch equity initiatives such as expanding support for Black students, developing inclusive teaching, and creating new mental health supports across a bilingual faculty.

01

Challenge

Challenge

A bilingual faculty recognized an urgent need to create deeper, long-term equity changes that would truly meet the needs of the diverse student population. The goal was to remove barriers to success for equity-deserving students and foster a campus where every student felt supported and included.

02

Approach

Approach

This work combined strategic funding development with deep community collaboration to ensure that investments meaningfully addressed local priorities and systemic barriers:

  • I began by building relationships across campus with staff, faculty, and students in order to identify equity-related barriers and priorities.

  • By building on these partnerships and leveraging internal data to demonstrate institutional readiness and accountability, I secured $640,000 in provincial and federal funding to support equity-related initiatives.

  • I then partnered with students, faculty, and staff to shape a strategic spending plan that reflected the community’s priorities and needs.

Outcome

Outcome

These initiatives laid the foundation for lasting systemic change. By combining significant funding with community collaboration, we launched many initiatives, including:

  • Expanding support and opportunities for Black students through a Black Student Advisory Board, scholarships, guest speakers, and community events.

  • Co-creating a community of practice on inclusive pedagogy to support faculty in developing their teaching approaches.

  • Improving accessibility and inclusivity in both digital and linguistic spaces.

  • Strengthening infrastructure across the campus for equity, wellness, and student success, including funding a bilingual Student Mental Health Portal.
